On November 13, 2004 the eyes of the competitive eating world were on Chattanooga, TN and the inaugural Krystal Square Off World Hamburger Eating Championship.

The competition would be intense, with top-ranked Takeru Kobayashi taking on the best eaters America had to put up against him. Who could take down Kobayashi. Could it be the mysterious Matt "Psycho" Ward, the Krystal Lover the holder of the two-minute world record of 21 Krystals. Would it be rapper, scholar, and gurgitator Eric "Badlands" Booker? And what about Sam Vise and Jeff Hicks, the two Krystal Lovers who had defeated top-ranked eaters to claim their spot in the World Championship? Would the deceptively diminutive Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas, the 100-pound eating sensation, stand tall and take down Kobayashi?

In the end, no one could compete with Kobayashi and the 69 Krystals he put away in the eight minute contest. This world record total was 23 Krystals ahead of second-place Sonya Thomas.

Despite the gap between Kobayashi and his competition, the eating that took place that day firmly established the Krystal Square Off as one of the "majors" on the competitive eating circuit.
