November 19, 2005 will long be remembered as a landmark day in the world of competitive eating. For the first seven minutes of the Square Off World Championship contest the previously unthinkable happened; someone was ahead of Takeru Kobayashi in a contest.

That someone was heralded rookie Joey Chestnut. Chestnut led for the first seven minutes, but Kobayashi pulled ahead in the final minute and finished the contest with a 67-62 victory.

Kobayashi won the championship, but Chestnut showed the world that Kobayashi is human after all.

While Kobayashi and Chestnut rightfully attracted the most attention, there was impressive eating throughout the table. Sonya Thomas finished third with 56 Krystals, maintaining her status as one of the elite eaters on the circuit. Fan favorite Tim "Eater X" Janus improved upon his qualifying number and put away 41 Krystals, much to the delight of uber-fans Sister X, Brother-in-Law X, and The Whaler.

One of the more suprising stories of the contest took place at the far left end of the table. "Humble Bob" Shoudt claimed fourth place by eating 51 Krystals, a 22 Krystal improvement over his qualifying total.
